Are you ready for SPRING THUNDER! The location of Saratoga Springs provides for a unique experience were outside of the city limits you’ll find a lot of farmland and public wooded lands. With that combination, the spring and fall hunting seasons is a busy time of the year in the woods, now more than ever. In New York State the spring turkey season begins May 1 lasting till May 31 with hunting allowed from one half hour before sunrise to noon. Hunting can occur on private lands with permission, public lands owned by DEC and Saratoga County unless otherwise restricted. We understand that with the current situation involving CVOID-19 more and more people are going outdoors for exercise and a chance to get out of the house. If you are going to go outside for a walk or hike please follow these tips

- Wear blaze orange and avoid wearing colors the resemble a turkey (blue, red, brown)
- Do not walk through the woods making sounds that resemble turkeys
- Avoid wild turkeys
- Be respectful to those hunting in the woods, hunting season is only the month of May and till noon everyday
- There are plenty of options in the surrounding area to get outside without the risk of going into a area that is being hunted, places like the Saratoga Historical Park in Stillwater offers outdoor trails without hunting

And now for those who are venturing into the woods for that Ol’ Tom. Make sure you are hunting in a safe manner and practicing all rules of safe firearm usage. Make sure to be familiar with your firearms prior to using them in the woods and be familiar with the different kind of malfunctions that could happen. Prior to shooting at a turkey, ensure you will be able to make a clean shot and know what is beyond your target. If you are hunting private land, confirm you have permission to be on that land, let the landowner know when you will be on the land and only hunt land you have permission to be on. Different pieces of land might have various regulations, as a hunter it is your responsibility to know all the regulations for where you will be hunting. Be mindful if you are hunting public lands that more people are in the woods today than normally because of the CVOID situation. Only take a shot at a turkey if it is safe to do so.

For additional hunting regulations please visit the New York State DEC website, for information on land that does not offer hunting, please visit the Saratoga Plan website or the Saratoga Historical Park website.

And most important, if you’re hunting or going for a hike, be safe and enjoy the outdoors!
We would like to thank Jennifer Marcellus, owner of Miss Scarlett Boutique, for the donation of 400 masks that will go to our members to help in the fight against CVOID-19. We can not thank Jennifer enough for the donation! We ask everyone to please support Miss Scarlett Boutique through these times and even after life returns to normal!
The bad news first, we are not allowed to enter this contest ourselves. The good news ... Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo announced a poster contest for students in grades K-12. The theme is for students to describe what first responders mean to them. Now the press release does say how it recommends that students should consider incorporating either the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office, Saratoga County Public Health, a EMS agency or a Fire Department into the poster. If we may suggest a recommendation, the Saratoga Springs Fire Department might just be an excellent option to make a poster about, but that's just our opinion. The deadline is May 18, 2020.
